The real motive is clear: YouTube wants you to consume content on their platform, not share it via Plex or Jellyfin. But let's be honest — self-hosting gives you control over your data and privacy that no subscription can buy.
Of course, there are risks: you need to know how to set up a server, keep software updated, and monitor security. For a developer, that's a warm-up. For an average user, it might be a hurdle.
