According to climatologists at Virginia Tech, over half of the US is experiencing the worst drought in decades. While the average person worries about their lawn, IT professionals are fretting over server rooms where cooling systems are running at full tilt.

How the Drought Hits IT

Water isn't just for drinking – it's crucial for cooling data centers. In drought-stricken California, operators are already implementing conservation measures: raising operating temperatures, switching to dry cooling (which, of course, is less efficient). Developers used to infinite cloud resources might notice their instances slowing down – not due to code, but because of the heat.

By the way, if you thought your laptop only got hot from compiling TypeScript, in this weather it might overheat even from a simple console.log. And office air conditioning? Forget it – IT directors are already counting every kilowatt.

What to Do?

  • Optimize your code: fewer computations mean less heat. Your users won't notice the difference, but your servers will thank you.
  • Consider geographic distribution: if you have a data center in Arizona, maybe it's time to shift some load to Oregon?
  • Don't forget backups: drought can lead to power outages (hydroelectric plants suffer too).
