Surfel-Based Global Illumination in the Browser: Now with WebGPU

Developer Jure Triglav decided it was time to bring the computationally heavy technique of surfel-based global illumination to the web. And guess what? It works. You can now get beautiful, photorealistic scenes right in your browser — though your fan might start spinning like it's trying to take off.

How It Works and Why It's Cool

Surfel-based global illumination uses tiny "surface elements" (surfels) to model indirect lighting. Imagine scattering billions of tiny mirrors across a scene, each bouncing light onto each other. In real time. In a browser. Sounds insane? It kind of is. But thanks to WebGPU and clever optimizations, the author achieved interactive frame rates on modern GPUs.

For developers, this means you can now create immersive web applications with high-quality lighting without installing Unity or Unreal. Of course, mass adoption is still a ways off — but as a proof of concept, it's promising.
