Spain Blocks Polymarket and Kalshi: Prediction Markets Now Gambling?
Spanish regulator decides prediction markets are gambling, blocks Polymarket and Kalshi for lack of license.

Spain has decided that prediction markets are not just a geeky pastime but actual gambling. The regulator demanded a gambling license from Polymarket and Kalshi, and when none was produced, blocked them in the country. Spanish enthusiasts can no longer bet on who will be the next president or whether it will rain tomorrow.
What happened?
The National Commission on Markets and Competition (CNMC) ruled that platforms trading on event outcomes fall under gambling laws. Polymarket and Kalshi, operating without a Spanish license, got banned. Interestingly, CNMC cites consumer protection, even though users of these platforms usually know what they're doing – unlike those betting on red at the casino.
Why does it matter?
This sets a precedent: if Spain leads, other EU countries may follow. For crypto enthusiasts, it's a blow – Polymarket uses blockchain, and its decentralized nature clashes with licensing requirements. Developers will have to either implement KYC/AML or find workarounds (VPNs and crypto wallets to the rescue).
METABYTE's take
Spanish regulators seem unaware that prediction markets are not lotteries but opinion-gathering tools. But if you still want to predict outcomes, better write your own smart contract – at least your code won't be blocked for lacking a license.
