RTX 5090 and M4 MacBook Air: Can It Game? eGPU Experiment
Hooking up an RTX 5090 to an M4 MacBook Air via eGPU — surprisingly, it works. Mostly.

Ever tried gaming on a Mac beyond solitaire? It's like asking your grandma to debug a Kubernetes cluster: theoretically possible, but you'll both cry. So Scott J. decided to test if an M4 MacBook Air can handle an RTX 5090 through an eGPU. Spoiler: it can, but with some shamanic dancing.
According to the post, the combo works, but macOS isn't exactly welcoming to external GPUs, especially after Apple's silicon transition. With proper drivers and a few workarounds, games do launch. Performance, however, is bottlenecked by Thunderbolt, so don't expect native PC levels. The upside: your MacBook Air won't melt into a puddle of aluminum, unlike most gaming laptops.
Alternative — cloud streaming via GeForce Now or Moonlight, but that's renting, not owning. With eGPU, at least you feel in control. If you have a spare RTX 5090 lying around (it happens), give it a shot. Just be prepared for half the games to refuse to run — but that's tradition at this point.
