QuestDB team announced that their beloved WINDOW JOIN is now parallel and vectorized. Sounds like magic, but it's actually the result of long nights with SIMD instructions and multithreading.
Previously, WINDOW JOIN worked like your grandma's TV: sequential and with interference. Now the engine splits data into chunks, processes them in parallel, and vectorization allows munching more rows at once. Performance gains of up to 10x on some queries.
The developers claim this is especially useful for time series and real-time analytics. Typical scenario: you're calculating a moving average or comparing values across adjacent windows. Used to be painful, now it's just mildly annoying.
They leveraged SIMD (Single Instruction, Multiple Data) – the CPU executes one instruction on a bunch of data simultaneously. Like peeling potatoes not with a knife but with an industrial peeler. Only for numbers.
