OVMS: Open Source EV Monitoring — Because Your Car Shouldn't Have Secrets

Ever wanted to know what your Tesla does while you're asleep, but refuse to pay for yet another subscription-based "smart" service? Meet OVMS (Open Vehicle Monitoring System), an open source project that turns your electric car into a fully remote-controlled lab rat.

The system is built around a module that plugs into the OBD-II or CAN bus of your vehicle. Then comes the magic: you get data on battery level, location, temperature, and can remotely turn on climate control or even start the engine (if it's a hybrid). All without any cloudy services — data goes to your own server or MQTT broker.

Developers will love the architecture: firmware in C++ for ESP32, REST API, MQTT support, and even Home Assistant integration. Yes, it's OSS, so feel free to fork and customize — you could even tie the battery level to your smart coffee maker.

The downside: you'll need to get your hands dirty with hardware and configuration, but that's not for "users" — it's for real geeks. Supported vehicles include Tesla, Nissan Leaf, Renault Zoe, BMW i3, and about a dozen more. If your car isn't on the list, welcome to the issues — contributors are always needed.
