MomBoard: E-ink Display for a Parent with Amnesia

Developer Jan Miksovsky faced a tough challenge: his mother suffers from amnesia, and typical digital reminders (smartphones, tablets) were too complex and caused anxiety. So he created MomBoard — a minimalist E-ink display that shows only the most important information: current time, date, name, and a few key reminders.

The device runs on a Raspberry Pi and a 7.5-inch E-ink screen. Updates happen every few minutes, saving power and avoiding distraction. Data is transmitted via Wi-Fi, and the parent can manage content through a simple web interface. No buttons, sensors, or sounds — just quiet, clear text.

The key feature is the analog interaction method: the display hangs on the wall like a paper calendar. This reduces cognitive load and doesn't frighten someone with memory issues. Unlike a smartphone that requires active input, MomBoard passively shows information.

For developers, this is a great example of how E-ink technology can be useful not only for e-readers but also for medical/care solutions. It also highlights the importance of user experience for vulnerable groups.
