Microsoft Office 2019 & 2021 on Mac: Soon You Can Only Look, Not Touch

Microsoft just announced a move that feels like your landlord changing the locks because you refused to sign a new lease. Starting in 2026, Office 2019 and 2021 for Mac will lose editing capabilities. You'll be stuck in view-only mode, like a PDF that someone forgot to unlock.

What's happening?

According to an update on Microsoft's site, users of Office 2019 and 2021 on macOS won't be able to edit documents unless they subscribe to Microsoft 365. So your trusty Word will become a glorified reader – you can look at your files, but don't you dare change a comma. It's like buying a car, but the manufacturer decides to disable the engine after five years unless you pay a monthly fee.

Who gets hit hardest? Developers and startups who prefer a one-time purchase model. Now they'll either have to shell out for a subscription or migrate to alternatives like LibreOffice or Google Docs. Or maybe write a Vim plugin that mimics Word – just kidding, but you never know.

Microsoft claims it's about "security" and "staying current," but it smells like classic vendor lock-in. Remember when you could buy Office and use it for years? Those days are gone.
