Meta Unleashes Llama 3: Open-Source LLM Gets a Major Upgrade
Meta released Llama 3, its most powerful open-source LLM yet, with up to 70B parameters and improved reasoning.

Meta just dropped Llama 3, the third generation of their open-source large language models, and it's a beast. Two sizes are available right now: 8B and 70B parameters, with a 400B+ monster on the horizon.
What's new? A more efficient tokenizer, a beefed-up context window (8K tokens), and significantly better performance across benchmarks — especially in reasoning and coding tasks. Meta claims Llama 3 outperforms Llama 2 across the board, and early tests seem to confirm it.
For developers, this is huge. Llama 3 is released under a permissive license (commercial use allowed) and is already supported by Hugging Face, vLLM, Ollama, and others. You can run it locally for code generation, documentation, log analysis, or even as a local copilot — no cloud dependency, no data leaving your machine.
Meta also published a responsible use guide and fine-tuning recipes, making it easier to adapt the model for specific domains. If you've been waiting to fine-tune a big model without breaking the bank, now's your chance.
METABYTE studio's take: Llama 3 is a solid pick for embedding AI into your product, especially if data privacy and cost control matter. We're already experimenting with it for UI generation — the results are surprisingly good.
