Mayerowitz broke down a classic Mario level and found that only a small set of mechanics (jumping, movement, enemies) creates almost all the enjoyment. The rest — decorations, rare power-ups — are just extras. For a developer, this is a hint: focus on the core gameplay, don't spread yourself thin.
