Lynn Conway, Computer Architecture Pioneer, Dies at 85
The legendary scientist whose ideas underpin modern processors has passed away at age 85.

The IT community has suffered an irreparable loss: on June 9, 2024, at the age of 86, Lynn Conway — a brilliant computer architect whose developments are still used in every modern chip — died.
Conway is best known as the co-author of the revolutionary textbook "Introduction to VLSI Systems" (1980), which fundamentally changed the approach to microchip design. Together with Carver Mead, she proposed the concept of automated VLSI design, enabling the shift from manual routing to software methods — and that kickstarted the era of affordable processors.
What does this mean for developers?
Without Conway's work, there would be no ARM chips in your smartphone, nor GPUs for neural networks. Her "Mead & Conway revolution" methodology became the industry standard. Moreover, Lynn was a transgender woman who, after being fired by IBM in 1968 for transitioning, went on to a brilliant career at Xerox PARC and the University of Michigan, becoming a symbol of resilience and talent.
