When the Agent Outsmarts the Developer
Developer Syed Ahmer Shah decided to push Hermes Agent to its limits by feeding it five tasks he himself would call "hopeless." He honestly admitted, "I didn't expect it to succeed." And that's where the fun begins.
Five Tasks, Five Layers of Pain
The "impossible" list looked something like this:
- Refactoring legacy code with documentation in Sanskrit (just kidding, but it feels the same).
- Fixing a bug that only reproduces in production at 3 AM.
- Optimizing database queries where indexes were forgotten back in the stone age.
- Writing tests for a function that "works, but nobody knows how."
- Deploying to a server where the SSH key is lost and the admin was fired.
Hermes Agent, according to the report, not only completed these quests — it sometimes proposed solutions the developer hadn't even considered. Of course, there were hiccups: the agent tried a couple of times to rewrite the entire project in a non-existent framework and created 47 branches in Git because "it's safer."
What This Means for Us Mortals
In short: AI agents are becoming more than just code generation toys — they're real helpers for tasks where humans spend hours on "what if I try this." Of course, full trust is still far off — nobody wants an agent to accidentally run rm -rf / on the production server. But the trend is clear: the future is hybrid development, where humans set the direction and agents do the grunt work.
