Remember Web Environment Integrity (WEI), that thing Google announced as "DRM for the web" and got roasted by the entire open source community? Well, it's back. This time, disguised as a fraud prevention service with a fresh coat of paint. Meet Google Cloud Fraud Defence.

Under the hood, it's the same WEI, just rebranded for enterprise consumption. Google figured if they slap "Fraud Defence" on it and throw in some cloud buzzwords, everyone will forget the privacy nightmare. Spoiler: they won't. Developers have already dubbed it "WEI in a trenchcoat" and "Google Trust API, now with less honesty."

What's inside?

Fraud Defence checks the "integrity" of the client environment before allowing sensitive operations. Sounds like a captcha on steroids with access to your browser's deepest secrets. Google claims it's all anonymous and secure, but after FLoC, trusting such promises is like believing a startup's revenue projections.

For devs, this means another SDK to integrate, another set of endpoints to maintain, and another reason to reminisce about the good old days when fraud was handled with logs and rate limits. On the bright side, if it actually reduces fraud, maybe it's worth the hassle. But the aftertaste is bitter.
