Light Without Electricity: Glowing Algae Could Make It Possible
Scientists engineered algae to glow on their own, no plug required — Edison's bulb might finally get a break.

Imagine forgetting to pay your electricity bill but still having light at home. No, it's not magic or a neighbor's generator — it's glowing algae that researchers at the University of Colorado have turned into living light bulbs.
The team genetically modified certain algae species to produce bioluminescence without any external trigger. Previously, to make algae glow, you had to shake them or add special chemicals — basically like an old flashlight that only works after you hit it against a table. Now they glow continuously, feeding only on CO₂ and light.
Of course, we're not replacing your living room chandelier just yet: the brightness of these "lamps" is currently comparable to a battery-powered nightlight. But for street lighting or decorative purposes, it's a viable option. Especially if you're tired of burnt-out LEDs and want something that at least doesn't require soldering.
The main advantage is eco-friendliness: algae absorb CO₂ instead of emitting it. The downside — you can't turn them off with a switch, only by covering them. But for hardcore eco-activists, that might be a feature, not a bug.
