Gemini API File Search Goes Multimodal: Now with Image, Audio, and Video

Google decided that text-only file search is so last decade and updated the Gemini API: File Search is now multimodal. That means you can search not only text but also images, audio, and video. Imagine you've dumped a bunch of bug screenshots into JIRA, and Gemini finds the right one by description — no manual scrolling through 47 columns.

How does it work? You upload files (images, audio, video) via the API, and Gemini indexes their content, including visual and audio features. Then you can ask something like "Find the screenshot with error 500" — and the model returns relevant files. This isn't just OCR; it's full content understanding: object recognition in images, phrase spotting in audio recordings.

For developers, this unlocks a ton of use cases: automating media library search, analyzing meeting recordings (no more listening to hours of calls to find that one decision), or building RAG systems that work with unstructured data. Of course, there's a catch: the token cost can bite if you decide to index 4K video.
