Glasses are so ubiquitous that we barely notice them on our noses. But have you ever wondered how many bugs and features this technology had before becoming a stable release? The book 'A Four-Eyed World' takes a retrospective look at the evolution of spectacles — and it's not a dry chronicle but a detective story with lenses.

From Early Experiments to Mass Production

The first glasses appeared in the 13th century, and, as usual, they were invented multiple times independently — a classic case of 'not invented here' syndrome. Back then, they were just two lenses riveted together, balancing on the nose about as well as cheap VR headsets do today — wobbly and prone to falling off. In the 16th century, glasses with temples that hooked behind the ears appeared — a true UX breakthrough, though it took a while to figure out.

Then in the 18th century, Benjamin Franklin (yes, the guy on the hundred-dollar bill) invented bifocal lenses so he wouldn't have to carry two pairs. It's like combining your IDE and terminal into one window — brilliant and obvious only in hindsight. In the 20th century, glasses became a mass-market product, and with plastic lenses and titanium frames, a fashion accessory too.

Glasses as a Metaphor for IT Crutches

If you think about it, glasses are the oldest 'crutch' for the human body. We can't fix vision at the code level, so we add an abstraction layer over reality. Sound familiar? Developers do the same: instead of rewriting a legacy monolith, they add another adapter. The irony is that glasses are 'open source' technology: any optician can fit lenses to your prescription, no licensing fees.

The Future: AR and Smart Lenses

Now glasses are experiencing a renaissance: Google Glass, Apple Vision Pro, smart lenses with displays. But, like early spectacles, the market is still rough — batteries last an hour, interfaces are clunky, and prices bite. The book reminds us that every technology goes through an 'ugly duckling' phase before becoming mainstream. So maybe in 20 years we'll look back at today's AR glasses with the same nostalgia we now feel for pince-nez.
