When Microcomputers Were the Size of a Fridge and Ran on Magic
If you thought the history of microcomputers started with the Altair 8800 or Apple I, hold on to your seat — or rather, your transfluxor. In 1962, Arma (a division of American Bosch Arma) unveiled the Arma Micro Computer, arguably the world's first microcomputer. Except instead of silicon, it used magnetic amplifiers called transfluxors. Yes, those things you might have seen in old physics textbooks but never imagined could power a computer.
How It Worked and Why It's Genius
Transfluxors are magnetic cores with multiple holes that could store and switch states. The Arma Micro Computer used them for arithmetic operations and control. The device weighed about 12 kg and consumed 150 W — a breakthrough for 1962. Compare that to a modern Raspberry Pi that fits in your pocket, but back then engineers were thrilled to be able to lift a computer by hand rather than with a crane.
Why We Didn't Know About It?
History is harsh: the Arma Micro Computer never went into production. Maybe because transfluxors were hard to manufacture, or perhaps marketers thought "microcomputer" sounded too futuristic for 1962. Either way, the first microcomputer appeared 9 years before the first Intel 4004 microprocessor.
