Descent 3 Source Code Released – Retro Gaming Meets Open Source

Great news for fans of retro shooters and code explorers: the source code of Descent 3 has finally been published on GitHub.

The initiative was led by Kevin Bentley, who contacted his former boss at Outrage Entertainment and got the green light. He's now looking for co-maintainers to revive the project and make it run on modern hardware.

Descent 3 is not just a game—it's a true spatial thinking trainer: full six degrees of freedom, no "up" or "down." For developers, it's also a great example of how 20-year-old code architecture can be adapted to modern standards.

What does this mean for the community?

  • Possibility to port the game to Linux, macOS, and even consoles.
  • Chance to fix old bugs and add new content.
  • A retro game dev lesson: how games were written before Unity was born.

The repository is already available, but the code needs serious polishing. If you're a C++ fan and not afraid of legacy code—welcome aboard as a contributor.

METABYTE studio's comment: Opening the source of cult games is a great way to breathe new life into them and learn from industry veterans. If you need help adapting legacy code for modern platforms—we know how to do it without losing performance.
