Chevrolet eCrate: Drop-in Electric Motor for Classic Cars

Chevrolet Performance has decided that if we're going electric, we might as well do it with American flair. Their new eCrate package is essentially a ready-to-install kit for turning your old muscle car into a modern EV. It includes a 200-horsepower electric motor (400 volts), controller, accelerator pedal, and even a fuse block. All you need to do is take it, connect it, and drive.

But hold your horses: it's not just 'plug and play'. The eCrate is designed for front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layouts. If you have front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, you'll have some serious work ahead. However, for those dreaming of a silent Chevrolet Camaro with no exhaust noise, it's a godsend.

Interestingly, GM goes further by offering additional components: battery packs, cooling systems, and even adapters for transmissions. The prices are steep: the motor alone costs around $6,500. But considering you get a factory warranty and support, it might be cheaper than a DIY disaster.
