Bill Atkinson, one of the key architects of the graphical user interface, has died. Yes, the guy who gave us QuickDraw and HyperCard — and those dropdown menus we all take for granted.

Atkinson was a core member of the original Macintosh team. His QuickDraw made WYSIWYG a reality, and HyperCard was the granddaddy of hypertext systems, paving the way for the web. Without it, no Wikipedia, no modern internet as we know it.

But more than that, Atkinson had a knack for making the complex simple. His "it just works" philosophy still resonates with developers today. He didn't chase features; he built tools that changed the world.

METABYTE studio comment: Bill Atkinson proved that a single developer can reshape an industry by focusing on user experience, not just code. We strive to honor that principle in every project we build.
