It's not just classic NIMBYism—there are real concerns: noise, strain on the power grid, and the vague fear that 'they'll steal my data from the cloud.'

The irony? The same people who complain about buffering are the ones posting 4K stories and demanding instant Netflix loading. But mention building a data center next door, and suddenly they're tree-hugging activists. It's a paradox worthy of a Black Mirror episode.

Speaking of deserts: Arizona and Nevada have become meccas for hyperscalers. But even there, locals are grumbling—water cooling dries out the air, and AC units hum like a Boeing taking off. For devs familiar with 3 AM deploys, this feels like when prod goes down and your TL says 'just reboot.' Except here, it's 50 megawatts of reboot.

So the data center market is caught between a rock and a hard place: soaring demand for cloud and AI, and grassroots opposition. Maybe it's time to revisit edge computing and distributed architectures? Or at least disguise server farms as apartment buildings—who'll notice a little extra noise in a high-rise?
