While we argue over which is better — SSD or HDD — scientists from the Netherlands took an unexpected turn and recorded data on… scotch tape. Yes, that same office tape that always gets lost in the drawer.

In a paper published in New Journal of Physics, researchers describe a 'mechanical latching' principle: adhesive tape can be in two stable states — stuck or unstuck. They propose using these states as 0 and 1. By manipulating sections of tape, bits of information can be written and stored without electricity.

So far, the prototype stores only a few bytes, but the authors believe the technology can be scaled. Imagine: instead of a server room — a roll of tape. Cheap, simple, and eco-friendly.

Of course, commercial application is far off: read/write speed, reliability, and durability are still questionable. But the idea of mechanical memory based on adhesion is a great example of how simple physical phenomena can underpin new technologies.
